Salt Lake City Will Host 2034 Winter Olympics
SALT LAKE CITY (NEWSnet/AP) — Salt Lake City will be an Olympics host again after the International Olympic Committee formally awarded the 2034 Winter Olympics to the United States.
This means Utah will host its second Games after hosting in 2002.
A watch party took place at 3 a.m. local time — 11 a.m. in Paris — to celebrate the announcement. Olympic fanatics gathered downtown and pitched tents before sunset Tuesday to wait for the announcement. The date happens to coincide with a state holiday, which contributed to the crowds who gathered.
Salt Lake City is the lone contender the Olympic committee is considering for 2034, as there are simply fewer cities willing and able to welcome the Winter Games given weather trends and high operational costs.
Because of that, there has been some discussion of setting a permanent rotation for Winter Olympic cities.
