WILMINGTON, Del. (NEWSnet/AP) — Closing arguments began Monday afternoon in the trial against Hunter Biden involving federal felony gun charges. 

Hunter Biden, who is the son of President Joe Biden, did not testify.

The case put spotlight on a turbulent time in Hunter Biden’s life after his brother Beau’s 2015 death; with circumstances that are under scrutiny as his father runs for re-election.

Several members of Hunter Biden’s family were in the courtroom Monday, including first lady Jill Biden and her sister Bonny Jacobs, and Hunter Biden’s wife, Melissa Cohen Biden, and sister, Ashley Biden.

His uncle, James Biden, and aunt, Valerie Biden Owens, also were in the courtroom.

President Biden was away in France much of last week, and heads to Europe again this week for the Group of Seven leaders meeting in Italy.

Hunter Biden been charged with three felony federal gun charges resulting from a 2018 firearm purchase when he was, according to his memoir, he was addicted to crack.

Specifically: He has been accused of lying to a federally licensed gun dealer, making a false claim on the application by saying he was not a drug user and illegally having the gun for 11 days.

If convicted, Hunter Biden faces up to 25 years in prison, though first-time offenders usually do not get anywhere near the maximum.
