South Korea Restarts Anti-North Loudspeaker Broadcasts
SEOUL, South Korea (NEWSnet/AP) — South Korea on Sunday resumed anti-North Korea loudspeaker broadcasts, in retaliation for the North sending more than 1,000 balloons filled with trash and manure over the past few weeks.
South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed the military conducted a loudspeaker broadcast. It didn't specify the border area where it took place or what was played through the speakers.
"Whether our military conducts an additional loudspeaker broadcast is entirely dependent on North Korea’s behavior," the Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement.
Hours earlier, South Korea national security director Chang Ho-jin presided at an emergency meeting, at which officials decided to install equipment to begin broadcasts.
The South had discontinued such measures in 2018, during a period of engagement with the North, under Seoul's previous government.
