The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is announcing the first case of influenza A virus identified in a Michigan resident.
MDHHS tells us it was found in a farmworker who had regular exposure to livestock infected with influenza A.
According to the Centers for Disease Control the risk to the public remains low and the farmworker diagnosed with influenza A had mild symptoms and did recover.
MDHHS says since 2022, there have been two previous human cases related to bird and dairy exposure in the U.S. -- one in Colorado in 2022 and one in Texas in 2024.
As of Wednesday, the virus had been confirmed in 51 dairy herds in nine states, according to the U.S. Agriculture Department.
15 of those herds were in Michigan.
