OCEANSIDE, Calif. (NEWSnet/AP) — A vacant restaurant at the end of a Southern California pier caught fire Thursday.

The pier in Oceanside, about 40 miles north of San Diego, stretches more than 1,900 feet, allowing visitors to walk out over the ocean waves.

The flames caught at a vacant restaurant at the end of the pier, the department said in a statement.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

Crews battled the blaze for nearly three hours before they were able to contain it and try to save the nearly 140-year-old pier.
