House Speaker Johnson Will Meet With Trump Regarding Election Integrity
WASHINGTON (NEWSnet/AP) — House Speaker Mike Johnson will meet on Friday with Donald Trump for a press conference on election integrity, at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club, a campaign official said.
The joint appearance comes as Johnson is trying to maintain his position as speaker. The planned meeting was first reported on CNN.
Johnson, of Louisiana, told GOP lawmakers at a private meeting Tuesday he had spoken with Trump the previous night, but he shared no details of their talk.
The speaker, once skeptical of Trump, became a key supporter. He led one of the main legal challenges to the 2020 election results.
Since becoming House speaker in fall 2023, following the ouster of Kevin McCarthy, Johnson has tried to keep a close relationship with Trump.
