WASHINGTON (NEWSnet/AP) — The Biden administration is sending Xavier Becerra, the nation’s top health official, to Alabama on Tuesday for discussions with patients and doctors about a court ruling that upended in vitro fertilization treatment.

Becerra, secretary of U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, plans to meet with patients and doctors who have been affected by the court’s ruling.

“The decision in Alabama will have heart-wrenching consequences for women & their families,” Becerra said.

The visit by Becerra comes days after Donald Trump vowed to protect access to the fertility care.

President Joe Biden has called the ruling “outrageous.”

Since the court’s decision, several clinics have paused IVF treatment. Some lawmakers in Alabama say they’re scrambling for a solution.
