MOSCOW (NEWSnet/AP) — Russia’s prison agency says that imprisoned opposition leader Aleksei Navalny has died. He was 47.

The Federal Prison Service said in a statement that Navalny felt unwell after a walk on Friday and lost consciousness.

An ambulance arrived to try to rehabilitate him, but he died. There was no immediate confirmation of Navalny’s death from his team.

Navalny has been serving a 19-year term on charges of extremism. He was considered a prominent foe of Russia President Vladimir Putin; campaigning against official corruption and organized major anti-Kremlin protests.

His arrest happened after his return to Moscow from Germany, where he recuperated from nerve agent poisoning that he blamed on the Kremlin.
