LAHAINA, Hawaii (NEWSnet/AP) — Authorities in Maui are opening more of the wildfire burn zone for visits by residents and property owners who lost homes.
Early this week, officials began permitting those who lived in a small section in the north end of Lahaina to return for the first time since Aug. 8, when wildfire demolished much of the town.
On Oct. 2-3 residents of three more streets in that area will be allowed to return, Maui County said Thursday.
Officials have urged returning residents not to sift through the ashes for fear of raising toxic dust. Some families have sought to recover heirlooms and keepsakes from the ruins.
