September kicked off with some excitement in Alpena after the fire department was called to a dumpster fire in a church's parking lot Friday.

At 11:45, the Alpena City Fire Department was requested to 322 W. Chisholm Street, the St. Bernards Church parking lot, for a dumpster fire.

When crews arrived, they found a large roll-off type dumpster with its contents actively burning.

On-duty crews quickly applied water to contain the fire as it was located close to one of the parish buildings.

The dumpster was half full of construction materials from the reconstruction of the building’s roof covering.

The duty crew responded with seven personnel and an additional four off-duty personnel were called in to back fill the station.

Crews remained on scene for over an hour and the cause is under investigation. No injuries were reported.
