New AI Developments Detect Wildfires, Give Dangerous Recipes
(NEWSnet) — Another week, another stretch of rapid development in artificial intelligence between good, bad, and ugly.
First off, — the good — California has a new program that helps AI detect possible wildfires across the state.
State officials placed 1,000 cameras around strategic locations that are at risk. The program alerts first responders of fires before they get out of control. Like one outside San Diego just last week, it has already stopped potential wildfires in its tracks.
Meanwhile, — the bad— in New Zealand, a supermarket chain begin experimenting with a new AI tool that helps consumers come up with new recipes called Pak ‘n’ Save’s Savey Meal-bot and its suggestions are anything but. They include weird combinations like an Oreo vegetable stir fry to some dangerous recipes like Mystery Meat Stew, which social media users found include human flesh.
Elsewhere, hackers from around the world were in Las Vegas over the weekend to expose how AI tools can be manipulated to help bad actors. This is intended to help Washington and the private sector put in place more safeguards.
The White House argues this would slow AI development there that could be used for nefarious purposes.
