IN Couple Injured in Boat Explosion in Mason Co.
An Indiana couple was burned after their boat exploded late Friday night.
At 11:30 pm, Mason County Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol Deputies, as well as Marine Patrol Deputies, were called to the Ludington Municipal Marina to assist the Ludington Police and Fire with a reported boat explosion with someone on board.
When deputies arrived, they found two victims from Indiana on “C Dock” with severe burns.
The pair was transported to Corewell Health Ludington Hospital and later transported to Corewell Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids.
The Indiana couple had just arrived on their vessel when they noted a strong fuel smell and attempted to disconnect the vessel's batteries.
In doing this a spark was created causing the explosion.
The Mason County Sheriff’s Office Marine Division was able to tow the 38-foot vessel from the Ludington Municipal Marina to the Copyeon Park boat launch.
On Saturday at noon, the Mason County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team conducted underwater recovery operations in an attempt to recover debris and any other personal items from the explosion.
Divers recovered several pieces of debris from the explosion.
The Sheriff's Office states that their deputies spoke with the family and the couple is in serious but stable condition.
