Colorado Supermarket Shooting Suspect Diagnosed with Schizophrenia
DENVER (NEWSnet/AP) — Lawyers for a man charged with killing 10 people at a Colorado supermarket in 2021 confirm he has schizophrenia.
Court records show four psychologists have concluded that Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa has the mental illness.
One expert found the 23-year-old was “approaching catatonia" — the inability to move or speak while in jail.
The defense brief was filed in response to the district attorney's request to allow another prosecution expert to conduct a different kind of evaluation of Alissa.
In December, Alissa was deemed mentally incompetent to stand trial and was moved to a mental hospital for treatment.
Since then, his prosecution has been on hold.
