White House Says U.S. Will Run Out Of Money To Fight Pandemic If Congress Doesn’t Pass Covid Funding Bill
The White House struck an urgent tone Tuesday.
Warning Congress that unless a number of pandemic-era programs receive the money they need the American people could be "deeply impacted".
Maintaining that there is no plan B.
The White House is seeking 22.5 billion dollars for the programs and Congress nearly gave them most of that in a just-signed government funding bill.
It was cut out in the 11th hour to ease the concerns of Republicans, who insisted that Congress offset new virus money by cutting funds for state and local governments allocated for the spring.
Without any movement, however there is the risk that new challenges could arise.
A new mutation of the Omicron strain is already sweeping across China and the U.S. could itself see infections rise again.
More than just overall preparedness
Without funds, the White House warns that costs for could go up for coronavirus measures that have been covered, including things as simple as tests and vaccines.
Also more urgent needs like health care for the uninsured the reimbursement for which ends early next month.
While it is unknown whether progress can be made in talks with lawmakers, the White House says they have not given up yet.
