Border Apprehensions Still High, Child Migrant Numbers Fall for April
Border apprehensions are still at a 20-year high, but the amount of unaccompanied minors fell for April. The numbers for year-to-date total encounters, ending in April, are higher than all of 2020.
In 2020, when the wall on the US-Mexico border was finishing up, the amount of encounters with migrants at the border reported by Customs and Border Protection was 458,088 for the year. At the end of April in 2021, that number has jumped up to 749,613.
Members of the Texas agricultural community say they feel it.
“I know I have one grove down on the river where occasionally we have traffic through there. We have plenty of support from Border Patrol and state troopers and the county," says Fred Karle, a Rio Grande Valley, TX citrus producer.
Karle tells us he doesn’t know who is contacting his workers, whether it be the smugglers or cartel bosses, but they make their point clear.
“They'll come along and just tell our men say, ‘Hey, we're gonna have some traffic down here. Y'all might want to go home tonight'" he explains.
However, there is one bright spot in the statistics. Just over 17,000 unaccompanied migrant minors entered U.S. border custody in April. That is down from March which had a record number of the children arriving at the border.
The White House says the president is working to address immigration and legislation to handle the problem.
"The president remains committed to, that immigration continues to be a top priority for the president. That's why he proposed a bill on day one. That's why he communicated in his joint session speech that we should look for ways to find common ground, find agreement on what pieces we can move forward. And, he certainly believes even as we've made progress at the border that, in order to address this over the long term, we need to put in place long term solutions so he will continue to absolutely advocate for it," Jen Psaki, White House press secretary, told the media today.
Psaki also says a priority is to get kids to safe and humane conditions.
